Women's Work 2008

May 9 - 25, 2008

This year’s offerings included a staged reading of a new play by Nashville author Dorothy Marcic, whose musical, Respect, has played in cities worldwide. Also on the bill are readings of Carolyn German’s Nashville – the Music City Musical and Sue Fabisch’s Motherhood – the Musical.

Other highlights included a pair of documentary films by Chicagoan Salomé Chasnoff; a film and concert entitled The Healing Power of a Song by hit songwriter and cancer survivor Benita Hill; a variety of dance performances including an appearance by the Nashville Chinese Culture Club; poetry and readings by Gwynelle Dismukes, Thandiwe Shiphrah, Stephanie McGuirk and many others; short plays by Catherine Holder, Rachel Carrozierre and Molly Hoekstra; and musical performances ranging from the inspired jazz-pop of Jazzmyn to Chinese folk and opera selections by Xiu Hong Feng.

We were especially proud to welcome a return appearance by the women of Magdalene House, reading their poetry and essays.

The artwork of photographer and calligrapher Sue Dippold, artist Marla Faith, photographer Kim Kinsley-Herrera, and graphic designer Amy Olert was displayed in the lobby for the run of the festival.

In all, more than 100 artists presented work, and our audience tripled over the previous year's attendance.
