Nickel and Dimed

January 12 - 28, 2007

In January, 2007, we presented the Nashville première of Nickel and Dimed, based on the best-selling book Nickel and Dimed: On (Not) Getting By in America, by Barbara Ehrenreich.  This production inspired articles in the Tennessean and the CityPaper, and attracted large audiences.

Terry Occhiogrosso played Barbara. The ensemble included Melissa Austin, Shane Bridges, Sonia Justl, Tamiko Robinson and Sara Sharpe, in a kaleidoscopic array of supporting roles.

Amy Stumpfl, writing in the CityPaper, said that Nickel and Dimed
"makes us think without shaming or preaching."

Many performances were introduced by guest speakers who discussed some of the issues of poverty and inequality raised by Nickel and Dimed. Among our speakers were Melissa Watts, 2-1-1 Tennessee; Fay Holcomb, MANNA Nashville; Jonathan White, Vanderbilt Campus Progress; Rev. Bill Barnes, Congregation Living Wage Campaign; Congressman Jim Cooper; Tennessee Representative Brenda Gilmore and Tennessee Representative Janis Sontany.

Our “Pay What You Make an Hour” night benefited dozens of people who would not otherwise have been able to attend.
